Cavalcanti vs Hyun Ko, Currie vs dos Santos, Bashi vs Ramos Fight Picks – Contender Series – September 3, 2024

Igor Cavalcanti vs Seok Hyun Ko

  • Igor Cavalcanti
  • Age: 26
  • Pro Record: 9-0
  • Striking: near plus (65)
  • Power: near plus (65)
  • Grappling: near plus (65)
  • Seok Hyun Ko
  • Age: NA
  • Pro Record: 10-2
  • Key Wins: Beat a well rounded 6-1 fighter.
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: fringe average (45)
  • Wrestling: average (50)

Ko’s striking looks really good, fluid karate base, smoothly moves in and out, but there’s flags. Just a few years ago, Ko got knocked out by Han Seul Kim, who went 1-2 in the UFC. Last fight only went 48 seconds, not too much data to take away from that. Fight before, he fought a 51 year old journeyman who had a hard time defending himself. Ko’s last fight with a decent sample was against a 5-4 wrestler who I thought had 45 striking and 50 wrestling. Ko did great on the feet. Did get hit some. 55 striking. But Ko struggled with the wrestling during the first half of the fight. Cavalcanti is very interesting in that even though there’s not much video on him out there, it wouldn’t matter being that all 9 of his fights have been finished in the 1st round. His longest fight was 4 minutes 25 seconds, 7 of his 9 fights have lasted less than 2 minutes. The very little I’ve seen, he reminds me of a smaller Jailton Almeida, very explosive.

Chris’ Pick: Cavalcanti by 1st round knockout.

What odds I think the favorite should be at: Cavalcanti -500

Will Currie vs Djorden dos Santos

  • Will Currie
  • Age: 25
  • Pro Record: 12-3
  • Key Losses: Lost to a 10-7 wrestler.
  • Key Wins: Knocked out a well rounded 11-3 fighter. Beat a well rounded 5-1 fighter.
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: a little above average (55)
  • Wrestling: above average (60)
  • Grappling: a little above average (55)
  • Djorden dos Santos
  • Age: 26
  • Pro Record: 9-1
  • Key Wins: Knocked out a well rounded 4-1 fighter. Beat a well rounded 8-2 fighter. Split decision over a 3-0 wrestler.
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: a little above average (55)
  • Grappling: average (50)

Watching Currie’s last fight with Contender vet Leon Aliu, it looks like Currie might have 65 wrestling. But I’m pretty sure Currie’s striking is just a 55 as Aliu did land more shots. And the other thing is Currie lost to a 10-7 wrestler in Cage Warriors just last year. Dos Santo’s last fight, I’m decently sure his opponent has 50 wrestling. Could be wrong, the opponent’s wrestling could be a 55, but more likely a 50. And dos Santos struggled to get ahead there. Wrestling was close to equal. Dos Santos also has good size for the weight class, long reach, but is not as strong defensively.

Chris’ Pick: Currie by 2nd round ground and pound TKO.

What odds I think the favorite should be at: Currie -225

Austin Bashi vs Dorian Ramos

  • Austin Bashi
  • Age: 22
  • Pro Record: 12-0
  • Key Wins: Submitted a 14-3 striker. Knocked out a 6-1 grappler. Beat an 8-1 grappler and a 9-3 wrestler.
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: a little above average (55)
  • Grappling: above average (60)
  • Dorian Ramos
  • Age: 30
  • Pro Record: 8-2
  • Key Wins: Beat a 7-1 grappler and a 5-1 striker.
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: a little above average (55)
  • Wrestling: above average (60)
  • Grappling: average (50)

I have Bashi’s grappling as a 60 for now, but it could be a 55. Pretty sure his striking is just a 55. Ramos last fight, he took on an opponent who I thought has 50 wrestling and Ramos dominated with takedowns. Possible Ramos wrestling could be as high as a 65, but based on how the striking was close to equal, much more likely I got the tool pegged right as a 60.

Chris’ Pick: Ramos by decision.

What odds do I think the favorite should be at: Ramos -135

Yuneisy Duban vs Shannon Clark

  • Yuneisy Duban
  • Age: 28
  • Pro Record: 5-0
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: a little above average (55)
  • Wrestling: average (50)
  • Shannon Clark
  • Age: 32
  • Pro Record: 5-0
  • Key Wins: Submitted a 5-0 grappler. Knocked out a well rounded 3-1 fighter. Beat a 2-0 striker.
  • Striking: near plus (65)
  • Power: near plus (65)
  • Grappling: above average (60)

Chris’ Pick: Clark by 1st round knockout.

What odds I think the favorite should be at: Clark -275

Quillan Salkilld vs Gauge Young

  • Quillan Salkilld
  • Age: 24
  • Pro Record: 6-1
  • Key Wins: Knocked out a 3-1 grappler and a 6-1 striker. Submitted a well rounded 4-1 fighter.
  • Striking: above average (60)
  • Power: above average (60)
  • Grappling: above average (60)
  • Gauge Young
  • Age: 24
  • Pro Record: 8-1
  • Key Wins: Knocked out a well rounded 4-0 fighter.
  • Striking: a little above average (55)
  • Power: a little above average (55)
  • Wrestling: above average (60)

Salkilld is very well rounded, good cardio. Young has good cardio too, but prefers using his wrestling. Salkilld’s striking could be as high as a 65.

Chris’ Pick: Salkilld by 2nd round knockout.

What odds I think the favorite should be at: Salkilld -250
